Outdoors, the club holds one beginners courses per year comprising 6 hours tuition over six weeks. The first 4 of these will be held on a Thursday outdoors, then the last 2 weeks on a Wednesday to help you get the feel of a club night whilst still being reassured by the presence of our coaches. For the indoor course the first 4 weeks will be on a Monday, changing to a Wednesday for the last two weeks.

Indoors the format changes to a 2 hour lesson over 3 weeks, held on a Saturday 12-2pm. following the 3rd session you will have the chance to stay for the club session which starts immediately afterwards.

You will be given the opportunity to attend a free intermediate coaching session once you have settled into club life.

During the Spring/Summer the courses will be outdoors at the BRJ school in Wellington and in Autumn/Winter, indoors at Charlton School, Wellington.

All equipment is provided for the course and tuition is led by qualified, CRB cleared coaches. We carry full insurance cover through our affiliation to the Grand National Archery Society - the sports governing body in the UK.

Cost is £35 for adults and £30 for juniors - this includes a £5 refundable fee for equipment (arm guard/finger tab) on completion of the course.

Please note that available spaces fill very quickly and the courses are

usually full 4 or 5 weeks before they start!

***Parents - please note that you will be expected to remain with children under 15 during the lessons***

FAQ's

CHILDREN

Is there a minimum age for children?

No – but a reasonable degree of co-ordination, concentration and strength is required. We
usually find from 8 or 9 years is ok. Contact the course organiser to discuss if in doubt.

Do I need to remain with my child during the lessons?

If your child is under 15 years of age then you will be expected to remain with them for the
duration of the lesson. The club accepts no responsibility beyond its legal requirements and
parents are to ensure that suitable collection arrangements are in place if leaving their child.

Do you have a Child and Vulnerable Person Protection Policy?

Yes. We have a Child Protection Officer and all our qualified coaches are CRB cleared.

What if it is raining?
Archery is an outdoor sport and as such we will usually shoot in all but heavy rain. If in doubt
contact the course organiser at about 5.30pm to confirm if the course is still on.

What facilities are there (toilets & refreshments)?
Outdoor toilet facilities are VERY limited – be warned! We are restricted to a camping toilet for
emergency use. Indoor toilet facilities are OK.
Refreshments such as tea, coffee, cans of pop and crisps are available to purchase from our
clubhouse outdoors.

PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS

Do I need to be physically fit?

Archery is a physical sport and will require a reasonable degree of mobility and strength –
contact the course organiser to discuss if in doubt.

Can you cater for physical/learning difficulties?
Possibly – dependant on the nature of the difficulty – contact the course organiser to discuss.

Will there be any physical contact between the coach and the archer?

Yes, a degree of physical contact will be necessary during the tuition.

TUITION

Do I need to provide any equipment?
No – all equipment is supplied by the club.

What clothing should I wear?
Close fitting on the upper body and arms – avoid baggy sleeves and bulky jackets. For the
outside courses you should ensure that clothing, including footwear, is suitably warm and
waterproof as necessary! Hats are ok but hoods are no-go as they interfere with the required
technique. One point to note – if you have long hair then best if it is tied back.

What type of equipment will I be using?
We will be using only lightweight “recurve” bows (the type used in the Olympics). During the
course there will be a discussion and demonstration of these and the other types of bow
available (Longbow and Compound bow). If you have a specific interest in a particular bow type
then discuss with the course coaches.

Are the coaches qualified?
Yes, the course leaders will be qualified to a minimum of Level 1 Coach. Tuition may be
supported by candidate coaches and experienced club members.

What format does the tuition take?
The course is very much “hands-on”. There are some initial administration/safety issues to cover
and we have to get you equipped with a suitable bow etc. This is followed by a demonstration of
technique by the coaches. All this takes about 30 minutes of the first lesson only – after that you
will be shooting for the remainder of the course. Further tuition/coaching is undertaken as you
are shooting. Because of this hands-on approach we limit the course size to 15/16 maximum –
this maintains a 5 to 1 archer to coach ratio at most.

AFTER THE COURSE?

What happens when I have finished the course?
Assuming you have achieved a minimum standard of ability, you will be presented with a
certificate stating that you have completed an archery beginners course with Telford Archers.
Please note that this certificate only signifies your competence and safety as at the time of the
course. It should not be viewed as an all time “license to shoot”.

Can I join Telford Archers after the course?
Yes – subject to your successful completion of the course. Our usual joining fee is waived for
anyone joining immediately after completing our beginner course.

Are there other clubs I can join if more convenient to me?
Yes – You will find details of other local clubs on the “links page of our website. Please note that
if you go to join another club they would almost certainly wish to undertake a separate
assessment of your ability – but you should not need to undertake another beginners course.

What if I want to carry on with archery but don’t want to join a club?
We would always recommend that you join a club – it is the only way that you can guarantee
shooting in a safe environment. It will also present you with opportunities to improve your ability
and give you access to a host of advice on technique and equipment from experienced club
members.
